Start with the quickstart
The agent quickstart installs the skill and starts your first recording in one conversation. Use the instructions below for manual setup.
Prerequisites
Use a coding agent inside your project on macOS or Linux, with shell access, Node.js 22 or newer, and Chrome or Chromium.
Install for this project
The canonical skill is userill.dev/skill.md. Choose the directory your agent reads: .agents/skills/rill for Codex, or .claude/skills/rill for Claude Code. For other agents, use their documented project skill directory. Run one installation method and preserve any existing customized skill.

Ask your agent to read the installed file immediately; automatic skill discovery may require a new session. Installation applies to this project and does not authorize recording future sessions automatically.
Install the CLI and check setup
npm install --global @runalabs/rill-cli@latest
rill doctorFollow failed-check recovery instructions. No Rill sign-in is needed for your first anonymous local recording. Existing account credentials continue to work.
Keep the skill up to date
Updating the CLI does not update your installed skill. After a relevant CLI or recording-workflow change, fetch the current skill file, compare it with your project copy, preserve any customizations, and ask your agent to read the refreshed file.
Verify the skill loaded
Ask: “Read the installed Rill skill. Explain how you will attach to Rill’s browser, record this project, and verify the result.” Expect a plan that uses remote encoding without installing FFmpeg, attaches to the returned cdpUrl, stops the recording, waits for ready, inspects the link, and reports anonymous expiry. Then use the quickstart prompt.
